What is Onychomycosis?

It is a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails that causes discoloration, thickening, and separation from the nail bed. This occurs when fungi attack nails that are already damaged through little cuts in the skin surrounding your nail or the opening between your nail and the nail bed underneath.
You can get a fungal nail infection from cross contamination of items such as nail clippers and nail tools, or towels, walking barefoot in public showers or pools. In some cases if you have athletes foot (a fungal infection between the toes, the fungal infection can spread to the nail/s.

What are the symptoms?

Some common symptoms of onychomycosis are
• The nail gets thicker.
• Change in colour of the nail — turn yellow, white, blue, purple or black.
• The skin near the nail may itch, or crack.
• Separation of the nail from the nail bed.
• Pain around the nail area.

What can treat Onychomycosis?

Creams and tablets can treat this nail infection but here at Glowry Cosmetic Clinic we use our Long Pulse laser to destroy the fungus by thermal energy (heat).
The Long Pulse laser beam is pulsed over the infected nail bed to generate heat under the nail and within the fungal colony.
Patients will feel a warm sensation, but this is not uncomfortable and has no harm or effect on the healthy tissue surrounding the fungi.

How soon can I see results?

Results are not immediate but as the nail grows out you should notice a new healthy nail growing from the matrix (where the nail grows from)
Results are observed roughly 4 to 6 month post treatment as the nails grow slowly.

More than one treatment is needed and the amount of of treatments needed differs from patient to patient.
