WHAT IS A COSMETIC ANTI WRINKLE TREATMENT USING BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A?
There are many commercial brands of Botulinum Toxin available in todays market, all of which are nearly identical in composition and action. They include Medytox and Botulux from Korea, Botox from the USA, Xeomin/Bocouture from Germany and Dysport from the UK. At Wellington Cosmetic Clinic we are fortunate to be able to provide all of these products, prices will vary in accordance with each supplier.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The full effect of the BTx is achieved about two weeks after treatment and then there is a gradual wearing off over a 3-4 month period. There is no hard and fast rule for how quickly the effect wears off since each patients metabolism is different. In the case of frown lines, there is an accumulative effect over time, as the habit of frowning is often broken, and the muscles seem to lose their bulk and strength. We suggest the first two courses of treatment are done at the 3 month period to give the best chance of softening any lines already established.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
Frown lines between the eyes, (the glabella), is the most common area for anti wrinkle treatments. Crow’s feet and forehead lines are the next most popular and BTx is also used to great effect in the lower face to correct gummy smiles, fine lip lines and Platysmal bands in the neck.
AFTER TREATMENT
BTx takes 5-10 days to fully “kick in” and is at its maximum effect at two weeks. Any touch ups needed are not done until after 14 days. Following a person’s first botulinum treatment, we will arrange, if necessary, a two-week follow up appointment to check that the result is optimal. In some cases, when someone is having their first treatment, we may intentionally slightly under treat and then top up at the two week follow up appointment. This is done to avoid over treating (mostly forehead and crow’s feet) as everyone responds slightly differently and it is easy to add, but cannot be “taken away”. Once the correct dose is established, it is recorded and used for subsequent treatments. Follow-up is at the client’s discretion for clients having repeat treatments.
WHO DOES THE INJECTING?
Wellington Cosmetic Clinic has Dr Robert Jones and Annie McIntyre responsible for all the injecting, following stringent protocols and standing orders. Prior to a first treatment going ahead, we need to be satisfied that all the necessary information has been given for the Patient to make as informed a decision as possible, and a medical history sheet has been completed with no contra-indications present. Patients are asked to read and sign a consent form outlining any potential side effects and complications. It is not necessary for subsequent treatments, but any changes in health status, or medications, since the last appointment, is taken note of and recorded.
